Aabel 2.4.2 (Gigawiz)
A very powerful, original, and capable data processing tool. Based on some of its powerful features, Aabel could arguably be considered a spreadsheet, a charting tool, a database or a statistical package (this module has been greatly expanded in version 1.5, to the point that Aabel is now included in our Statistics and Mathematics section). Aabel is difficult to beat in the spreadsheet and graph/chart category. Aabel has innovative and unique features. Little details sometimes make the difference: for example, the way Aabel allows you to extract at the click of one button the properties of a variable with a graphical representation of its distribution is impressive. The way that, in the worksheet, you can colour code the data points before getting to the graph, or determining the pattern of the data point, is also a nice touch. Aabel's interface and system is a bit idiosyncratic, it may take an Excel / DeltaGraph / StatView user some time to get use to it, but the power and flexibility of this versatile tool will make you love it in no time. Version 1.5.5 offers Quartz rendering. Version 2.0 is universal and brings tons of new features and options. Version 2.4 offers the following:
1.Leopard-ready: OS-related enhancements under Leopard include increased speed of Quartz drawing, faster and smoother worksheet window operations. Please note that you may observe minor OS-related cosmetic glitches in some interface widgets.
2.Supporting statistics plugin modules: Aabel stats plugin SDK v1.0 is now released; this allows users to write their own statistical methods/use Open Source code while using the services and technology that Aabel provides through the API.
3.Software Maintenance: Bug fixes and minor additions
CoStat 6.3 (Cohort Software)
CoStat is a Java program. From the site: CoStat Version 6.2 is an easy-to-use program for data manipulation and statistical analysis. CoStat is included with CoPlot and CoPlot Pro , but is also sold separately." See MacScience's Charts and graphs section for CoPlot.
DataDesk 6.2 (Data Description)
Finally, DataDesk is ready for OS X!
GLMStat 6.0 (Ken Beath)
Statistical program for analysing generalised linear models. Fairly elementary.
G*Power 3.0.9 (Axel Buchner)
Following information from the site:
G*Power 3 is a major extension of, and improvement over, G*Power 2. It covers statistical power analyses for many different statistical tests of the F test, t test, χ2-test and z test families and some exact tests.
G*Power 3 offers five different types of power analyses:
•A priori (sample size N is computed as a function of power level 1-β, significance level α, and the to-be-detected population effect size)
•Compromise (both α and 1-β are computed as functions of effect size, N, and an error probability ratio q = β/α)
•Criterion (α and the associated decision criterion are computed as a function of 1-β, the effect size, and N)
•Post-hoc (1-β is computed as a function of α, the population effect size, and N)
•Sensitivity (population effect size is computed as a function of α, 1-β, and N)
G*Power 3 provides improved effect size calculators and graphic options. It supports both a distribution-based and a design-based input mode. G*Power 3 is available for Mac OS X 10.4 and Windows XP/Vista. G*Power 3 is free.
InStat 3.0 (GraphPad Software)
Extremely well done, a great teaching tool for elementary inferential statistics.
JMP 7.0.2 (SAS Institute)
It is beyond every scientist we know why SAS has decided to cancel the development of StatView and keep developing JMP. When it comes to complex designs, typically complex ANOVA's, JMP is simply not even close to StatView's flexibility. To this day, few statistics programs can fulfill the void left by StatView. Some are doing the work, at least partially, such Aabel and SPSS. We should mention that SAS never volunteered a copy of their software for evaluation; we could be convinced that we are wrong.
kSpectra Toolkit 2.12 (SpectraWorks)
From the site: "kSpectra Toolkit consists of a set of programs for advanced spectral analysis of univariate or multivariate time series arising in many of the physical sciences, ranging from electrical engineering and physics to geophysics and oceanography, as well as biomedical sciences."
MacANOVA 5.05 release 1 (Oehlert & Bingham, University of Minnesota)
Power on X 1.6 (MMISoftware)
Power on X is an application for the calculation of statistical power. The application can determine required sample size to achieve a desired power, and can determine the power of previously ran experiments. The paid version generates power and sample size tables.
Prism 5.0 (GraphPad Software)
Big brother of Instat (see above), excellent package, solid tool for curve fitting and charting of data. Not a complete replacement for StatView yet (e.g., does not handle complex ANOVA's).
R 2.6.2 (R project)
From the R project page: "R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. R is similar to the award-winning S system, which was developed at Bell Laboratories by John Chambers et al. It provides a wide variety of statistical and graphical techniques (linear and nonlinear modeling, statistical tests, time series analysis, classification, clustering, ...).
StatisticS 4.3.0 (MericqSoft)
Follows the principle of GraphPad Instat's tutorial approach.
RATS 7.0 (Estima)
From the company's site: "Estima develops and sells the RATS (Regression Analysis of Time Series) software package. RATS is a leading econometrics/time-series analysis software package used worldwide by economists and others for analyzing time series and cross sectional data, developing and estimating econometric models, forecasting, and much more."
Regress+ 2.5.3 (Mike McLaughlin)
Regress+ 3.0 is in development. Version 2.5.1 is Carbon. A description of the software is available in this PDF document. Regress+ is freeware.
SPSS 16.0.2.1 (SPSS)
The classic statistics application for the social and behavioural sciences.
STATA 10.0 (Stata Corporation)
Quite complete stat package. The user interface is renewed but the program is still fast and powerful.
XLSTATS 2008.4 (Addinsoft)
Statistical add-in for Excel.
